Habits That Can Destroy Your Relationship: #3 Watching Porn

When researchers at the University of Montreal recently tried to find men in their 20s who’d never been exposed to porn, they couldn’t find ONE man who hadn’t seen it!

Data from a 2014 UK study backs this up, finding that finding that single men watch porn (90% online) for an average of 40 minutes, three times a week, while those in relationships settle in 1.7 times a week for 20 minutes. They’re not the only ones of course: 36% of women also watch porn online and 53% of women read sexy books.

Nothing wrong with that, on the face of it. Providing it doesn’t replace intimacy or create unrealistic expectations, it can certainly add a spark to your relationship.

But be warned!

One 2014 study found men (the research didn’t include women) who regularly consume porn had smaller brain volume and few connections in the striatum (the region of the brain tied to reward processing) compared with those who didn’t view porn.

Scientists aren’t quite sure what came first – the chicken or the egg – with this one!

The same brain regions are smaller in people who are depressed or alcoholic and therefore less likely to be in relationships and more likely to watch porn.

It’s also possible the brain region shrinks if men watch lots of porn because they’re so accustomed to looking at it – the “reward” is less rewarding. Plus it can mean they need to watch more porn or more extreme types of it to get excited.

Do you feel that watching porn (whether you’re both doing it or just one of you) is a habit that improves your relationship? Personally I find that a relatively small amount is exciting but too much turns me off completely.
